How to read it

The defense conceded the killings and contested only criminal responsibility, so an unattributed fact here is worthless. Every substantive line carries one tag:

Tag Meaning
STIPUndisputed by both sides, or physical evidence neither contested
PROSAsserted by the Commonwealth or argued in its case
DEFAsserted by the defense or argued in its case
TESTSworn testimony, attributed to the named witness
PRESSReported by media without a specific courtroom source

An ASR trial transcript of roughly 1,158,000 words now sits in transcripts/, built from broadcast auto-captions [S218]. It has no speaker attribution and its proper nouns were repaired by script, so it can never carry a TEST tag on its own. Treat it as a finding aid that says what was said and roughly where, then verify before citing.

Citations are [S1] through [S213], resolving in sources.md, which grades each source and lists what could not be retrieved. Six sources were read in the original: the DA's 2023-10-26 release [S82], the two civil complaints [S205][S206], both civil docket sheets [S207][S208], and the operative second amended complaint [S209]. One criminal trial transcript, Day 14 [S210], has been read through an automated summary rather than line by line. Everything else is contemporaneous reporting.

How sources are weighed

Facts are held to the best source available, in this order. Where a lower-ranked source contradicts a higher-ranked one, the higher one governs and the conflict is logged rather than smoothed.

Rank Class Standing
1Court documents and official records, read in the originalTruth, noting that a pleading is one side's allegation
2A, staff reporting by someone present, or a named expert on the recordTruth for practical purposes
3B, fast reporting by someone presentTruth, correctable
4C, secondary overview, not presentSupporting only, should not carry a fact alone
5D, search summary, underlying page never fetchedNot load-bearing. A lead
6E, machine transcription, no speaker attributionNot load-bearing. A finding aid

87.8 percent of citation weight in this corpus sits at rank 1 to 3. Every claim currently resting below that line is tracked in VERIFICATION.md, including the ones where the weakness cannot be fixed and is stated in the text instead.

Limits

  1. Eight original documents, and both civil dockets. Read in the original: the DA's 2023-10-26 release [S82], both civil complaints as filed [S205][S206], both civil docket sheets [S207][S208], the operative second amended complaint [S209], the 2023-01-25 search warrant return [S244], and the 177-page search warrant packet [S247]. Copies are in docs/. The two warrant documents are the first criminal-case filings this corpus has read. Still unread: the criminal docket, any jury instruction, and any order. The warrant packet is partial, roughly 122 of 299 reported pages missing, and came from a third-party archive rather than a court. The Trial Court's portal is gated behind a reCAPTCHA this corpus will not solve itself, though its document images proved freely downloadable once past it.
  2. Trial transcripts, at two grades. Eighteen Rev.com segments were read as automated summaries rather than line by line and are graded "Primary, summarized" [S210], [S215] to [S217], [S220] to [S234], [S250], [S251]. They are partial: each covers only part of its day. The separate ASR corpus in transcripts/ [S218] is a finding aid only. A mislabelled witness in one segment, corrected at [S251], is the standing proof that neither can be trusted unverified.
  3. Paywalls. The Globe and Patriot Ledger contributed only ledes. Rolling Stone, The Guardian, Variety and NPR were not retrieved. The New Yorker profile, the single richest source on Patrick Clancy, was read in full and is extracted in raw/s8-new-yorker-profile.md.
  4. Live blogs are fast, not final. Every conflict found is logged rather than smoothed.
  5. Patrick Clancy is a witness and a bereaved parent, not an accused. His file records the record and his own statements. It infers nothing.
  6. This wiki takes no position on whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible. It records what each side said, what each witness said, and what the physical evidence shows.

Maintaining it

To add a source: append to sources.md with the next ID and a grade, write an extraction into raw/, then cite it in the synthesis files. To close an open question: move it from section 1 of 08-open-questions.md to section 3 with the source that closed it.

Before considering a pass finished, run python check.py from this directory. It enforces the standards below and exits non-zero on any failure.

Standard Note
No duplicate source IDs
Every [S#] resolves
Every source is cited somewhere
No em-dashes in synthesis files
Every relative link resolves
Every referenced docs/ raw/ transcripts/ media/ path exists
Every table is cited, per row or by a source line attached to the tableRelaxed 2026-09-05 from "every table row cited," which had never been met. Table-level citation is long-standing practice here and is legitimate

Three conventions the checker depends on. A citation may carry a qualifier, as in [S45, headline only], and that still counts; it is how low-grade sources are marked. Gaps in the ID sequence are permitted and are reported for information only. IDs are never reused or renumbered, because citations across 74 files point at them; if two passes collide on a number, give the newer item a fresh ID at the end of the range. CHANGELOG files are maintenance logs, not synthesis, so their tables and their references to deleted working files are not checked.
